The Mac Clone Wars
While Apple is dealing with PSYSTAR another Mac Clone company has hit the market Open Tech. Unlike PSYSTAR Open Tech may have found away around being sued by Apple by not selling Mac OS X pre-installed passing the buck on to you’re the user.
Open Tech will sell their machines for US $620 and $1,200 while Psystar’s prices are $554.99 and $1,154.99 why are we still using coins by the way… Moving on of course the jury is out whether or not anyone will buy these machines or if they will even work as promised. What these two companies have shown is that Apple has a hole in its desktop line. A huge gap and if they do not feel it soon somebody else will.
Currently Apple’s desktop line consists of the Mac Mini starting at $599,
the iMac starting at $1199

and the monster itself the Mac Pro starting at$2799.
If you do the math you can see for yourself where the problem lies. Do not get me wrong all three are excellent machines.
However the Mac Mini and the iMac comes as what you see is what you get not leaving one much room for expansion and or customization. If one wants to swap out the video card etc etc on an Intel based Mac desktop one is force to purchase the Mac Pro which probably too much machine for 95% of the population.
Be honest the Mac Pro is truly a professional machine and if your Mac Pro has not made you back at least the money for you paid for in a year and a half and I am being generous here you truly do not need the machine.
It’s overkill but with the Mac Mini leaving no room to expand and the iMac presenting you with a wonderful monitor that you may discard when you buy another computer many people are have no choice but to purchase a machine that is out of their league.
This is the gap that Psystar and Open Tech are trying to fill as their high end desktops fall in that $1100 to $1500 price range with a Mac OS X based desktop that is expandable and or customizable. Hopefully Apple will see the writing on the wall and come out with a “Mac Pro Lite or Express” or the invasion of the Mac clones has just begun.
