Locking Down The Future

In the near future the police via OnStar will have the ability to shut off your car's engine remotely. Public transportation will be under the same boot as buses and airplanes will be equipped with kill switches.

Your favorite monopoly Microsoft and its Digital Manner Policies will put a leash on most electronic devices...

• i.e. Cellphones remotely set to vibrate mode in restaurants, concert halls and the theater...

• they may even be turned off on airplanes and in hospitals

• cameras could be prohibited from taking pictures in locker rooms, museums while recording equipment could be disabled in theaters and students could be prevented from texting during class

The options are infinite but dangerous for this to work efficiently you need a flawless hierarchical system of authority and then distributing said system among different devices... computers, PDAs, etc etc is an even harder task.

Let's not forget organizing the many different agencies involved to enforce these standards becomes a task nearly impossible.

Now for the dark side Young Skywalker...

Who has the authority to limit the functionality of another person's device and how do they get that authority?

Can we prevent this from being abused... can a burglar enforce a no photography and prevent security cameras from working even more realistic can the police and security people enforce the rule to avoid another Rodeny King incident?

Will the police have devices that cannot be limited etc etc

Just a few questions of many for you to think of... so while they pump the scare angle of wireless devices on airplanes and in hospital or you dream of a world where Stan is not yammering loudly on his cellphone in a restaurant...

This is really about what everything has been about for a long time the gatekeepers, the corporation wanting to exert their control over your electronics under the guise of Digital Manner Polices....
