Citibank Hack...
• A computer intrusion into a Citibank server that handles ATM withdrawals led to two Brooklyn men making hundreds of fraudulent withdrawals from NYC cash machines pocketing at least 750K in cash.
• The crime spree is the first to be publicly linked to the breach of a major U.S. bank's system.
• The proverbial stone is now rolling down the mountain. Avalanche soon to follow.
• Credit card and ATM PIN numbers show up mostly in the underground trading but are usually linked to social engineering scams ie... shoulder surfing, fake PIN pads affixed to gas station pay at the pumps terminals.
• But in this case the PINs came out of the bank environment which signals that even the savviest consumers who guard their ATM cards and PIN can become a victim...
• Citibank is not holding customers responsible for fraudulent withdrawals but will not disclose how many customers were affected.
