To Lacie Or Not To Lacie That is the question
What is about LaCie hard drives that causes such uproar? I guess with the Mac vs. PC wars just about over. That leaves us with the dreaded Final Cut Pro vs. Avid battle. Movie magic vs. Final draft anyone? Well, a new war is brewing actually it is not new it has been here for awhile but in the last few months it really seems to gaining steam and that war is over LaCie hard drives.
Are they any good or are they a piece of crap? Depends on who you ask... though it seems most professionals slam every LaCie product on the market especially when it comes to using them editing video or mixing audio etc etc...
Yet for every anti LaCie comment there is the LaCie hard drives work just fine me stories as well.
Which one is it? Honestly the answer probably lies with whom you ask….
To make things easier LaCie does not even actually make hard drives they make enclosures for hard drives.
The last time I check only Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung and Hitachi actually makes hard drives so there is nothing inferior about LaCie hard drives since they do not even manufacture hard drives.
So let us bury all those Seagate drives are better LaCie drives lies.
The problem may lie with the way LaCie markets its line of external hard drives. While companies like CalDigit, G-tech and Glyph design and market hard drives for editing audio and video.
Somewhere in that process the hard drive as they all eventually do goes kaput. You hop online and do a search on LaCie hard drive issues and find a bunch of people complaining about the inferiority of a LaCie hard drives and switch over to a more professional base hard drive which ends up costing you a lot more than your little brick LaCie drive which causes you to treat it with a lot of care and respect.
Yes you forgot to mention before your hard drive went kaput your little brother thinking it was a Lego tossed it on the other side of the room...
So with you caring so well for your new high-end drive it performs well time after time only feeding your opinion that LaCie products suck.
While just as many people myself included have edited high end video with LaCie drives that have stood the test of time in the same way as any other hard drive when cared for properly. We go out and tell others the wonders of LaCie hard drives which they go out and purchase and care for as well causing their drive to perform well time and time which leads to them telling others and so forth…
I am far from endorsing LaCie hard drives but my simple Porsche drive has stood the test of time while other around with more high end drives have went kaput time and time again.
Hard drives are finicky and number of things especially heat can cause them to fail are LaCie drives better than other drives on the market nope again they do not actually make drives but are there products better than most assume to be yes, yes and yes.
If anyone cares here is my dream Hard drive

LaCie offers a slew of options ranging from consumer all the way up to professional and you know us creative types we hate do research and end up purchasing some cute little Lego shaped hard drive to edit that short you and Billy shot over the weekend in DVC PRO 50 after all you can Pro Res it in Final Cut Pro or DNxHD in Media Composer...
