One step closer to virtual warfare...

Fresh from creating robotic flies binary maggots anyone? DARPA is hitting the boards again. The objective beside flushing money down the toilet is to design software that predicts the future for battlefield commanders. The core of this suite will be a digital CRYSTAL BALL oh swami oh swami that forecasts how a mission is going to turn out before it's done.

Going back to the days of Delphi I see (oracle)

Ahem the program is called "Deep Green" who knew DARPA were eco-friendly and its goal is to allow the commander to think ahead, identify when a plan is going wrong, well that happen once we went to war. Also "Deep Green" will help commanders develop alternatives ahead of real time. Forbin Project anyone?

A component of Deep Green will be "Sketch to Plan" a program that reads a commander's doodles, listens to his words, and then induces a plan filling in missing details.

Then there is "Sketch to Decide" which allows a commander to see the future by producing a comic strip take that Marvel. The strip will represent possible options in a given situation.

To make this work DARPA proposes two pieces of software. "Blitzkrieg which quickly model sets of alternatives while "Crystal Ball" will take information currently coming into a headquarters to figure out which scenarios are the most likely to happen, and which plans are likely to work best. Crystal Ball will use this estimate to the commander futures at which he shold focus some planning effort to build additoinal options.
