Web 3.0
While the boom of Web 2.0 is just beginning to blossom there are a group of start up companies and computer scientist hard at work on Web 3.0.
Their goal is to add a layer of meaning on top of the existing Web making it less of a catalog and more of a guide and even provide the foundation for systems that can reason in a human fashion.
Projects aimed at Web 3.0 all take advantage of increasingly powerful personal computers.
Web 2.0 describes the ability to seamlessly connect applications and services over the Internet. The concept of Web 3.0 or “ Semantic Web” the idea of adding meaning is just beginning. Basically from a web of connected documents to a Web of connected data.
The goal of Web 3.0 is to build a system that can give a reasonable and complete response to a simple question.
Example
I’m looking for a warm place to vacation and I have a budget of $3000. Oh, and I have an 11 year old child.
In its current state this question can lead to hours of sifting through lists of flights, hotels, car rentals etc etc
Under Web 3.0 this search would call up a complete vacation package that is meticulous as if it had been assembled by a travel agent.
In its current state the web is seen as being in its Lego phase different parts capable of connectivity to one another. While 3.0 is considered an era where machines will start to do seemingly intelligent things.
Our child the web is beginning to walk.
