Dark City

What do you get when you mix a little carbon nanotube which is one atom thick rolled up into a cylinder?

When you are researches at the RRensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York you get the “darkest ever” substance known to science…

This discovery will have an impact on applications in the fields of electronics and solar energy.

See the ideal black object absorbs all the colors of light and reflects none. The “perfect absorber.”

Of course creating an object that does not reflect light is not an easy task. So the people at Rensselaer Polytechnic, turned to carbon nanotubes – structures made from carbon that have unique properties.

Test showed that surface of carbon nanotubes was very good at absorbing light, and every poor at reflecting it. Carbon nanotubes make the ideal candidate for creating the “perfect absorber” since it allows one to tailor light absorption by controlling the dimensions of the nanotubes.
