Digital Divide ..
More and more at least a basic understanding of technology is needed. Now the Digital Divide to some is a reality, to others it is a fantasy and to many it is liberal nonsense and an excuse to give even more money to the “undeserving” poor.
Well, the DD does actually exist and I see it everyday. In most inner city homes there are no computers and in the homes where there are computers they are no more than accessories a status symbol, “ look at me I m cool I have one of those PC thingies.”
Before many of you misunderstand this, poor people are not scared of technology for nearly everyone has a cell phone. In fact the wireless industry markets heavily at the African American community or are those Lil Flip ring tones for Bill Gates?
This is not a joke and if you think that I am playing next time that you are in the “hood” observe and if you see 10 people at least eight of them are on a cell phone.
The question remains, which is more beneficial to a bright future a nice cell phone or being computer literate?
It is of extreme importance to get computers into the hands of more people of poverty and not just for them to set up accounts at myspace. Have fun but learn.
I am talking the about the basic stuff like what is an operating system? Can you name an operating system? Oh and there are more ISP out there than AOL and no the @ symbol does not stand for AOL.
Funny to you, is it? Well you will be surprised at the number of people who have no concept of Mac OS X or Linux etc…
There I no way that anyone under the age of 20 can expect to have a fair chance at a decent future without basic computer skills. Understanding technology is vital as the RRR were for previous generations.
It is not only vital to get some decent computers into the hands of the poor, disenfranchise and the African American community but to make sure that they understand the significance of the computer and technology.
