He’s already dead but too dumb to realize it.

That large rotting carcass you can see and smell heading your way is the music industry. The big behemoth fails to realize that life passed it by years ago. Then again he was always slow yes he was cute but still he was very slow. The latest ton of flesh falling from this oversize rodent is an article in the Huffington Post by super producer, performer and mogul Jermaine Dupri.

Mr. Dupri jumps in and defends fellow mogul cohort Jay-Z who earlier this month cause more flesh to fall from the rotting music industry and his decision to release his American Gangster inspired album of the same title as an album release only. That’s right selling of individual tracks are excluded and iTunes music store does not allow that.

One can easily understand Jay-Z purpose for this since the album is supposed to be a conceptual album based on the movie… or is Jay-Z following along with the rest of the evil hierarchy of Universal Music? Who knows? Who cares? Not I…

Dupri in his article pleads his case by defending art and integrity but his true colors begins to shine when he claims that the sell by song model is great for consumers and bad for the music business… Weird I always thought the music industry itself was bad for art and integrity.

He uses the sales figures of rap artist Soulja Boy who has sold over 4 million singles and only 300,000 albums.
He states that the consumer has been given to much control too soon… “Back in the day when people were excited about a record coming out we'd put out a single to get the ball going and if we sold a lot of singles that was an indication we'd sell a lot of albums. But we'd cut the single off a few weeks before the album came out to get people to wait and let the excitement build. When I put out Kris Kross we did that. We sold two million singles, then we stopped. Eventually we sold eight million albums!

Did consumer complain? Maybe so. But at what point does any business care when consumer complains about the money?

It’s that illogical thinking that has doom the music industry, as many know it.
Since Mr. Dupri and many other are hung up on money let us not forget that Soulja Boy has sold at least 4 million singles ahm… that’s 4 million dollars right there if we follow that 99 cent price model of the iTunes Music store and this is not 1999 or even 2003 we are not force to buy an entire album for just one or two songs…

So Soulja Boy probably has sold a lot of music to people who would not have purchased his entire album. Include his album which has at least sold 300,000 copies and finding a middle ground between current CD prices and the iTunes Music store lets say the average cost of said album is $10 which giving Soulja boy a total of 3 million dollars in albums sales… People that is over 7 million dollars right there not counting ring tone downloads, performances, soundtrack and maybe video game appearances and Soulja and his label has made a nice killing.

A killing more than likely he would not have made without selling 4 million singles and yes we all know that Jay-Z’s album is going to do well but how much more money would it have made if it had followed Soulja’s model?

At the end of the night if a fan wants only one or two songs off of the American Gangster album and have no legally way purchasing the single(s) what do you think their next move is going to be. The sound you hear my dear friend is another ton flesh falling.
