The Innovation Crunch

Judy Estrin former Cisco CTO in her book Closing the Innovation Gap argues that America is running low on innovation.

According to Estrin Bell Labs' discontinuing basic science research is a continuation of the trend that started in the 70's as corporations began to focus on efficiencies and productivity and made research more short term and tailored for the companies need.

As corporations cut back on their research labs the brunt of basic research has fallen on the shoulders of academia couple that with the reduction in government funding for basic science America faces an innovation challenge.
