Japan to go wifi

Japan always a trend setter when it comes to technology is ready to take things to the next level. But...
but... this is a bit much to swallow. Japan in an attempt to one up the rest of the world in being Big Brother has started.

Japan is in the process to set up an island where a plethora of sensors will allow doctors (yeah right) to remotely monitor the health of the elderly (applause) at the same time the movement of pedestrians will be monitored (getting warmer) as well. There is even talk that IC tags could be implanted into produce in order to divulge information such as where it was grown to a shoppers mobile phone. The gov't of Japan is in talks with local telecom carriers, electronics manufacturers, automakers, and other companies as it attempts to assemble the pieces... so far the northern island Hokkaido or southern island chain of Okinawa are the mostly likely candidates.

Sincererly doubt it would happen in Okinawa. That would require the government actually spending money on people in Okinawa, which it really doesn't like doing.

I actually live down here in Okinawa and haven't heard anything about this idea. Could you provide the link to the story so I can read more?

The Japanese government has never really been fond of Okinawa. It was originally the Ryukyu Kingdom until it was taken over by the Japanese 200 or so years ago. Due to the peaceful nature of the island and orders from the king that they should never fight, Okinawa was invaded without any sort of fight by mainland Japan.

During WWII Okinawa was classed as being expendable, and was merely used as a delaying tactic before the mainland invasion of Japan. There is a bit outcry at the moment in Okinawa regarding events in Okinawa in WWII. The Japanese government is going to change textbooks so that they no longer say the Japanese military gave Okinawans grenades and told them to blow themselves and their families up, because the American military would kill/rape/pillage/torture etc. The Okinawans are saying "But you did do that", but the intention is probably so that future generations will always think the Japanese and Okinawans were victims of America and not their own people.

Okinawa is the poorest prefecture in Japan and also receives the least funding from the Japanese government. In addition, a very large proportion of the US military bases and personnel are down here in Okinawa, seemingly out of the way for the "real" Japanese people.

The Okinawans know thet are not Japanese and I get reminded of it whenever I mistakenly refer to them as being Japanese
