Cells and Identity

A few days an associate of mines drop off a tape of a radio show that he listens to. He wanted to hear my opinion about the guest who was on the show. That guest was Dr. Bruce Lipton who was on to promote his new book The Biology Of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles. Dr. Lipton is a Cellular Biologist who received his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville before joining the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Lipton’s research on muscular dystrophy, studies employing cloned human stem cells, focused upon the molecular mechanisms controlling cell behavior.

On to the chaos in 1982, Dr. Lipton began examining the principles of quantum physics and how they might be integrated into his understanding of the cell’s information processing systems. He produced breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, which revealed that this outer layer of the cell was an organic homologue of a computer chip, the cell’s equivalent of a brain. His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment, operating though the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. Two major scientific publications derived from these studies defined the molecular pathways connecting the mind and body. Many subsequent papers by other researchers have since validated his concepts and ideas.

It easy to see that Dr. Lipton idea is revolutionary; basically he is challenging the current notion that a man is only the sum of his genes. I have never understood how this concept caught on and basically became the mantra of western society. I never thought that the concept was wrong but I knew it was incomplete. Really in its most basic aspect what biology and medicine are saying is that man is nothing more than a machine or a car no disagreement there. My objections come in when it comes to the maintenance or the upkeep of this machine/car called man. So much attention is giving to see if the car or the machine is working correctly or does it has defects and if it does depending on ones status and income the machine/car called man can be repaired. Still nothing wrong there but if the car/machine called man keeps breaking down maybe the car is not defective maybe the driver is. Rarely is this taking into consideration. I think no one really wants to say that you are the master of your domain because it strips those who have power of any and all control that they have over you. Now that is really revolutionary…

Moving away from that… Dr. Lipton ‘s book deserves at least one read from everybody and numerous reads from every person who feels that they are a genius. Here is the address to Dr. Lipton’s website.
