The Lawnmower Man

Got a chance to finally see The Lawnmower Man last night. I know most people and critics slammed the movie. Yada Yada badda boom badda bing. Overall the concept was great. The movie opens with a wonderful statement, “By the turn of the millennium a technology known as Virtual Reality will be in widespread use. It will allow you to enter computer generated artificial worlds as unlimited as the imagination itself. Its creators foresee millions of positive uses – while other fear it as a new form of mind control…“

Whew! While we are not quite there yet, but the day is coming. Just look at the improvements of artificial environments since the release of The Lawnmower Man, one does not have to compare movies such as the Matrix series or Sky Captain effects to that of The Lawnmower Man. Your average console video game creates an artificial environment that blows The Lawnmower Man’s effects out of the water.

What caught my attention the most in The Lawnmower Man is that one should never fear advancing technology. However, we must be careful in how we approach things. While Pierce Brosnan character Dr. Lawrence Angelo really wanted to use virtual reality to help mankind howerver, as in most cases with creators they are usually being funded by men who have ulterior motives. Yes the age-old battle between the innovators versus the power brokers. So often this conflicts takes to some new technology that was being created to help mankind and turns it into a tool to exploit mankind or even worse a tool that can destroy or harm mankind.
